Diaries, 1843, 1844.

Although Whitman kept these diaries while living in Portland, most of his notations concern persons and events in Saco and in other Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire cities. Whitman recorded the weather; several recipes; ordinations, baptisms, marriages, and deaths; civic events (including visits in 1843 to Saco by temperance lecturer John Bartholomew Gough); natural disasters; and vote tallies for Saco local elections and Massachusetts, Maine and New York elections. There are also records of persons admitted to membership by the Church of Christ in the Second Parish of Saco. There are no entries of a personal nature.
